A while ago I wrote a post about why I think simple images in black and white fail to call attention on social media, and expressed that I was going to slowly discontinue my black and white botanical photography because it is difficult to sell prints of those images. If you haven’t read the post, I offer a link here.
Life is rarely straightforward, and with a friend, I successfully proposed a botanical photography show, which is set for next year—more on that later. Meanwhile, a group project on the same theme is in progress. Ironically, here I am again, doing what I meant to stop: drawing attention to my black-and-white botanical photography.
My visit to Rio de Janeiro’s Botanical Gardens
When I was in Brazil on vacation, back in October, I took one day to visit the Botanical Gardens. It had been about 25 years since my last visit, time flies.
October is Spring in the Souther Hemisphere and it was still dry after the rainless winter. The plants were sad and crisp and there were few flowers. The foliage, as expected after a long period without rain, was dusty. Adding to that, the day was bad for photography, with harsh light and no clouds.
Despite the difficulties outlived above, the water lilies in the pond seemed to pose for me as if they were asking to be photographed.
The FEATURED IMAGE
I took the featured image (f/8, 1/320s, ISO 320) handheld. Although there were no clouds in the sky, the light on the lilies was spotty due to the trees surrounding the pond, casting shadows.

The FEATURE IMAGE was added to my GeoGalleries folder “Flower“.
