The beauty and bleakness of California’s Central Valley- part six

The vision

As I wrote in my last post about the subject, I have a collection of photographs portraying California’s Sacramento Valley, which is the northern portion of the Central Valley. And because I want to portray this valley as I see it, I am convinced that black and white works better for me: although color photos typically capture reality, the nonexistent black and white universe makes it easier to portray my unique viewpoint.

In my previous posts, I’ve aimed to provide some tips and guidelines on composition. I noted that photographing the Central Valley landscape is challenging due to its limited redeeming beauty and anchor points.

The photoshoot

Since my last update in August, I haven’t made much progress on this project, but on December 28, 2024, a nice day revealed itself through clouds and I convinced my photo peep Beth to go to the Grizzly Island in Fairfield with me.

The afternoon was exceptional when it comes to the quality of the light. During our visit, I captured yet another photo that I consider worthy of my collection, the FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH (f/13, 1/1000s, ISO 640). The old windmills are ubiquitous around this area and the clouds, with the light emanating from it, seemed to complement my vision.

Images of the collection so far

In the gallery below, all the images in the collection which I had previously posted are put together. Looking at the images side by side is a different experience from looking at each individually.

Question to my readers

What do you think about the collection and is there any photograph you think does not go well with the others?

Good placement of the windmill rotor against the clouds, which as the brightest things in the picture draw the eye. Easy to see why you’re happy with this atmospheric view.

Thank you. That day, the light was unusually cooperative.

By the way, I just looked up windmill in Portuguese and got the possibilities moinho de vento and cata-vento. Would either of those be correct for the kind of windmill in your photo, or is there a different term?

        Both are correct!

I have quite a fondness for windmills and their history, and this is one of my favorites among your images. Obviously the light in the clouds is dramatic, but there’s just enough light on the grasses to bring them into the frame, and the slight reflection on the blades is perfect. If I were to choose images for a triptych, I’d take the windmill, the hills beneath clouds, and the photo showing the open fence on the left.

Thanks for your input. The old windmills are quite charming.

Very nicely done, I find the moodiness of your images intriguing! I expect to cross paths in the field at some point, and I still owe you a canoe trip on Lake Solano. Perhaps when the water level rises and they start irrigating again….

I think all the photos go well together and seeing them like this, side by side, makes for a very impressive collection.

I think this set of photographs fits well together. They evoke in me a sense of the vastness of nature and would make an interesting sequence for a photography book on the subject, along with other photos from the same collection. Congratulations!

I think it’s a wonderful series that holds together beautifully. I’d submit it to LensWork as one of their six image portfolios (for which they usually want a series of 10-15 to choose from. It’s really well done!
