Wishing my followers a Happy Easter 2024!

A hint of nostalgia

If I could make a wish, it would be to relive an Easter day back in Maryland. The winters there were harsh, but the first signs of spring would always appear around Easter time. Yellow daffodils would bloom everywhere, bringing a sense of freshness and warmth to the air. Women would wear yellow dresses as they went to church with their husbands dressed in suits, creating a colorful and vibrant atmosphere.

My late husband and I were relatively young then, with very little money and a future ahead of us. We used to hide treats for the children, organizing treasure hunts and telling them that the Easter Bunny had hidden the goodies. Those Easter days were filled with chocolate, yellow flowers, homemade decorations, my failed attempts at cooking codfish with potatoes (a Portuguese dish), and countless hopes for the future.

Those were moments of creating unforgettable memories, and now it’s time to reminisce about them. It’s a bit sad, but it’s life. Everything evolves and changes.

The essence of Easter

As we celebrate this joyful occasion once again, let’s pause to ponder the true essence of Easter, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Easter signifies new beginnings, a time to release the past and embrace fresh starts. It’s a moment to express gratitude for our blessings and to spread love and kindness to those around us.

A prevalent symbol of Easter is the egg, symbolizing renewal and new life. As Easter coincides with spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s a time when nature rejuvenates, and the tulip, another Easter symbol, blossoms.

Tulips are often hailed as “the heralds of spring” for being among the first flowers to bloom. They also symbolize resurrection, mirroring the Easter theme of new life emerging from the old.

Easter was always my Mother’s favorite gathering and she loved having all the grandchildren running about, searching for the hidden eggs and chocolates. She loved to garden, and hers was full of splashes of color as the little ones darted about. Memories are so often a mix of wonder and nostalgia.

    Have a wonderful Easter!

Your nostalgic tone pervades the post. It’s understandable, given the past year in your life.

You’ve managed excellent tonality in the still life of the eggs. On Good Friday, the nest might even do double duty as a crown of thorns.

Unlike the Romance words for this religious holiday, like Portuguese Páscoa, English Easter traces back to the direction of the rising sun, which is the east, where Germanic imaginations imagined a dawn goddess, known in Anglo-Saxon as Eostre.

Your recollection of daffodils calls up a poem by Wordsworth.

I really like the poem. When I saw your mention of the crown of thorns I realized that I’m ahead of myself here. Jesus is still being murdered today. I should of held off to tomorrow to post. Anyway, thanks for the explanation about Easter. I had no idea. Love the poem!

It’s a beautiful photo. The two tulips seem to be interacting with each other.

Your description of your early Easter celebrations with your husband are so like those I remember from childhood. In addition to the things you mentioned (apart from the codfish and potatoes!) the new Easter dress always was a special treat.

I love the inclination of the tulips toward one another, and the wonderful textures in the photo of the nested eggs. Speaking of eggs, yesterday I heard on the radio that the world’s largest (albeit non-edible) Easter egg is in Brazil. It’s true! and you can see it here.

Easter eggs are an especially Brazilian tradition. As a child, I always wanted one of those child-sized eggs. There, Easter was a day to get sick from chocolates.
