Light matters at the Marin Headlands, Sausalito, CA, USA

On May 22, 2022, I headed to the Marin Headlands early, with filters and tripod in hand, trying to get back to ocean photography. The ocean, however, did not cooperate, and I decided to just walk on the beach, enjoy the fresh air and look for tide pools.

While walking on the beach, I saw a gentleman was stretching, getting ready to go into the water to surf. How the light hit his sculptured, rubber-covered body, and the landscape east of him, became the photograph of the day.

The FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH was taken with a Nikon 24-70 mm at 70 mm, f/10, 1/320s, ISO 200, handheld. I have added it to my project and series “Light Matters”, which is dedicated to the light and how it can transform mundane subjects and landscapes into something special.

I have not been to the Marin Headlands for photography since.

That’s a good off-center placement of the man. Did you also take photographs of the background (mountains, clouds, haze, light) in its own right?

I recognized the two gate pictures in your “Light Matters” series.

I did not. Up and behind this sand dune where the guy is stretching, there is a navy base and a parking lot, and it is extremely difficult to get more of that landscape without those elements when you are not right at “sea level” looking up.

I couldn’t help giving this one the title ‘Dawn Patrol’ — the surfing term for those who show up just before sunrise to catch the best waves. I really like the sense of expectation: preparing in the breaking day to meet the breaking waves.

I was unaware of the term!

Great photo. Beautiful light. This year’s LensWork book ‘contest’ is about light. That looks like it would merit a try to me!
