spent quite a bit of time in Rio de Janeiro in my youth, and during that time, I visited Christ the Redeemer several times. Sometimes I took the train up; other times, I hiked.
On my last vacation in Rio, I took another tourist to see the statue.
At the base, an employee told us that the statue would not be visible and that the view of the city was also obscured by fog. He suggested we consider coming back another time.
It was an unusually rainy and hazy September, and we had only a few days in Rio de Janeiro. After discussing it for a while, we decided to go up anyway. Traffic on the way to Corcovado had been terrible, and neither of us wanted to make the trip again another day.
During the train ride, glimpses of the city emerged from beneath the fog. Then, at the base of the statue, we caught a brief glimpse of Christ in all his magnificence, overlooking the city before he was once again enveloped in fog.
Along with the usual tourist shots, I also took the FEATURED IMAGE, corresponding to the back of the Christ, which has captivated me with its graphic elements.
I reversed the image in Photoshop for effect. Below, a more standard view of the same statue, viewed from the front.
