There is still some color at Hope Valley

Introduction

Changes are already happening in higher altitudes! In this post, I take the chance to introduce my WEST COAST AUTUMN COLLECTION, featuring Northern California’s typical natural and urban fall landscapes. The collection includes a few iconic places such as the Hope Valley cabin and Sorensens’ Resort, as well as Sierra Nevada’s landscapes, a few locations within the greater Sacramento area, and three images form Ashland, just past the Oregon border. The images are available as fine art prints, greeting cards, and other types of merchandise.

My WEST COAST AUTUMN COLLECTION is the result of several years of going out in the fall and collecting frames. Some years are better than others and last weekend was a good example of past peak conditions that still hold some interest.

The Featured Photograph was taken near the famous Hope Valley cabin. The colors around the cabin itself were not particularly vibrant this year, since they were prematurely past peak, but this small patch of aspens caught my eye. The different layers of color, from foreground to background, combine yellows and browns with a touch of green that adds depth to the frame.

Note that in my post-processing I blurred the background a bit to help with layering. That helps the aspens pop up a bit against the green.

Composing fall photographs in the Sierra Nevada can be tricky. The colors are often the main attraction, appearing in patches of aspen trees against a background of pines. Although vibrant, this combination can sometimes result in a flat-looking image.

When photographing autumn in the Sierras, look for a road, a fence, a creek or another element that adds depth to the composition. Roads and creeks are particularly useful for creating leading lines, as you can see in some of the examples in my fall collection.

I hope you have an outstanding leaf hunting season and remember, it goes very fast. Pick up your camera, phone or sketching book and go out while it lasts!

As your West Coast Fall Gallery reminds us, some parts of the country are fortunate to have a fall foliage season that others (like most of Texas) lack. I was happy last year at this time to “borrow” the Wasatch Mountains outside Salt Lake City and the land bordering Lake Tahoe for their wide-scale changing of the leaves, especially on the aspens.

Well, I lived on the East Coast for many years and it’s hard to beat the fall colors there…

I forgot to leave a link to the New Yorker cover I mentioned in your previous post, but couldn’t add it because the comment hasn’t yet been approved. Here it is. It’s still funny to me, just like the sculpture.

I’m still waiting for fall temperatures, and perhaps a bit of color. When it appears, I’ll remember your useful tips!
