I wish to remind my followers of the Crystal Hermitage Gardens as a photography destination. Here, amidst the rolling hills of Nevada City, California, a symphony of colors, scents, and textures unfolds, offering a visual feast for the senses and a haven for photographers seeking to capture the beauty of spring.

What to expect

The gardens are on a hill, with the tulips planted at every level. And because it’s on a hill, expect to climb some steps. There is a gazebo, a small pond, a water fountain, and a small church. It is possible to compose landscapes with those structures using the paths as leading lines, as in the featured photograph. However, landscape photography there is difficult at best, particularly on sunny days.

Above, a view of the path from the lower gardens to the upper gardens. If you want to purchase a print of this image, or other images taken in the same location, click here.

When at Ananda, I have found more satisfaction in close-up images of “expressive tulips”, or small details of the garden composed with the flowers (see below).

Tips for Spring Photography at Ananda

There is more to the gardens than landscape. For those planning a photography expedition to Crystal Hermitage Gardens or any springtime location, here are a few tips to make the most of your experience:

  1. Timing is Key: Early mornings and late afternoons offer the best light for capturing vibrant colors and soft shadows, so chose your timing wisely. An overcast day may be best for some types of landscape and close-ups of flowers.
  2. Get Up Close: Don’t be afraid to get close to your subjects to capture intricate details and textures. (click on the photographs below to see a larger version or purchase a print).

3. Compose with man-made elements:

Thanks for your tips and photographic energy!

If you’re ever in Holland, Keukenhof Garden is an amazing array of colors as is the phenomenal Butchart Garden in Victoria Canada. Currently Point Reyes is bursting on both Chimney Rock Trail and Tomales Point Trail.

I have recently been to Chimney Rock, but not Tomales Point. You are right, there were many wildflowers. Holland is a little far… but thanks for the tip.

What a lovely post. I appreciated being reminded of your tips, and sighed over the beauty of that place. I wasn’t sure where Nevada City is, so I looked at the map, and laughed. South of Nevada City, Colfax, California appears to be on or very near to I-80. In Iowa, the town I grew up in was only a few miles from another town named Colfax, and it, too, is situated on I-80. I also noticed an “Iowa Hill” near the California Colfax. It would be interesting to know the story behind those names; it’s possible some midwesterners were seeking a better life out west.

Iowa Hill is an unincorporated community that relies completely on solar panels and generators for power and has around 50 people. I was there a couple of times to hike the “other side of the” Colfax trail. It has a bar and a school, and a few houses.

In the opening picture you did a good job superimposing the metal curves and flowers on the real flowers and foliage.
