The best thing about Niteroi is the view of Rio de Janeiro

I am back after a somewhat long vacation, during which I visited family and friends in Brazil. As part of my visits, I got to stay a couple of days with my friend Luisa, whom I had not seen for 25 years. She lives in the city of Niterói, just across from the city of Rio de Janeiro.

In Niterói, I visited a number of different places (more on that later), including Oscar Niemeyer’s Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC). This museum is a striking example of Niemeyer’s futuristic, sculptural approach to architecture. Completed in 1996, the museum resembles a UFO or a delicate flower perched above Guanabara Bay. Its sleek, circular form, suspended on a narrow base, creates a dramatic contrast with the rugged coastline. The building’s design embodies Niemeyer’s signature style—fluid curves, open spaces, and an organic integration with the natural landscape.

I took the FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH (f/16, 1/320s, ISO 320) handheld with my Nikon Z50 and it’s kit lens. On a previous blog post, I outlined my reasons for having purchased this little camera again. In this photograph, I used the right-hand side and the bottom of the museum to frame the Sugar Loaf mountain at a distance.

One joke “Cariocas” (people born in the city of Rio de Janeiro) like to tell is that the best part of Niteroi (where I took the photograph from) is the view of Rio de Janeiro (the mountains at a distance).

I love the way you’ve used the building in the framing of the image!

Now you’ve replied that the best part of Rio de Janeiro is the view from the art museum in Niterói. It was clever of you to sandwich Pão de Açúcar between the museum’s overhang and the ellipse of the pool beneath it.

You got me wondering about the best way to translate “clever” into Portuguese. Google offers “esperto” first, with other choices being “inteligente,” “hábil,” and “talentoso.” Can you think of a better Portuguese word?

“ Um comentário inteligente” would be an appropriate translation.
