In the realm of Eastern spirituality, the ocean has long been used as a metaphor for embracing and navigating change. As spiritual teachers guide their followers on a transformative journey, they often draw parallels between the ebb and flow of the ocean’s waves and the art of accepting that nothing stays the same.
At the heart of these teachings lies the concept of interconnectedness. Just as the waves are inseparable from the vast ocean, our lives are intricately woven into the fabric of the universe. This interconnectedness extends to a central core, a realm of pure consciousness that unifies all. Imagine each wave as a unique expression of the cosmic consciousness.
In this context, a wave crashing upon the shore, losing its form to the vastness of the ocean, serves as a powerful reminder that nothing is ever truly lost. In this dance of creation and dissolution, we witness the cyclical nature of life itself, where transformation is not to be feared but embraced. It is through this surrender that we discover our true essence, untouched and eternal.
Last Mother’s Day, I took many photographs of the waves in the ocean near Gualala, CA. As I reviewed the images in the comfort of my home, one photograph stood outβa wave that seemed to bear resemblance to a human face. I had photos of it before and after the face formed. In homage to the spiritual teachings of the East, I curated a quadrptych showing the four phases of the life of the wave.
