Bucks for Ducks photography auction, 2024

A friend is volunteering in the organizing committee of the biggest fundraiser for the Yolo Basin Foundation, Bucks for Ducks. Every year, they hold a photo competition. Photos need to be taken in California (plants, animals, landscape, agriculture and open), and if selected by the jury, printing and matting is taken care of by YBF. This year, about 20 photos will be selected to be a part of the auction (online and in person at the event), and of these, five will be selected to be printed larger and framed.

If you are local photographer, consider donating to this easy, cost-free “contest”. Here is a link with information if you are interested: Bucks for Ducks call for photography. Last day to submit is July 10.

As I have already told everyone in my post “four reasons to stop participating in juried arts shows“, photo competition are a waste of money and time for me. However, I do occasionally donate prints to causes I find worthy, particularly when it costs me nothing!

The funds gathered by the Bucks for Ducks auction go to wetlands education and bus rides for students from Sacramento to the Yolo Bypass. For some of these kids, this is their FIRST time participating in a nature outing. It is so important to teach kids about our natural habitats!

I have donated a copy of the FEATURED IMAGE, (f/5.6, 1/200s, ISO 360 @110 mm), repeated below for convenience, which I took at the Gray Lodge on January 23, 2024.  The subdued colors are the environmental colors I found there, on a lovely evening of fresh air after rain, and high bird activity. There were some clouds covering the Sutter Buttes in the distance, and the sunset was fast approaching.

The FEATURED IMAGE has appeared before on this blog, in my post “Winter Photography in Butte County: Another photo from the Gray Lodge Wildlife Area“.

I enjoyed that image the first time I saw it. I think it’s a great selection for this event. Of course the presence of the ducks is appropriate, but the composition and colors are aesthetically pleasing as well.

Thank you. I hope it is approved, and that it helps them raise money.

Have you heard by now whether your photograph made it in?

Excellent. Glad to hear it. Must the submitted photographs have been taken within a specific time period, or could a photographer submit a photograph from California no matter when it was taken?

I think the only criterion was being from California and having a potential to sell. It’s a fund raiser. A.
