Sunset over Lake Tahoe

Last year I wrote a post about a snowshoeing adventure in Lake Tahoe. I indicated that making a black and white conversion might sometimes bring a fresh and interesting look to an otherwise ordinary photograph.

A few weeks after that adventure, I went again, this time to experience the sunset overseeing Lake Tahoe, also with Snowshoe Tahoe. It was an overcast day, and a storm was approaching. Our party of six, plus the guide, meandered through the snow-covered pine forest ground to a peak. When we reached it, we stopped to appreciate and photograph one another and the lake. We completed our hike a little before complete darkness, and I did enjoy coming down the snowy hill in the dusk.

I took the FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH from up the hill. This time, I decided to leave it in color. After all, what’s a sunset without colors?

This year, I would like to try again, perhaps find different conditions for a completely different feel. The first snow storm has already fallen on Lake Tahoe, and hopefully, there will be plenty of it in 2024.

Below a photo of me at the place where I took the FEATURED PHOTOGRAPH, a little before sunset.

Wondering if there’s anywhere in Brazil where you could get a picture of yourself like the one at the end of the post, I searched and found this: “Snow in Brazil occurs yearly in the high plains of the country’s South Region (comprising the states of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and Paraná).”

I agree with you that removing color from a photograph of a sunset—even a subtly colored sunset like this one—would not be the way to go. The curving layer of snow across the bottom of the image is a nice compositional touch.

It snows very rarely anywhere in Brazil where people live. The town of Bariloche, is where many people go see snow when the forecast says it’s coming, but it’s rare.

The colors are glorious I see why you didn’t turn it into B&W. Wonderful photo!

What a beautiful image. The colors are soothing, and the line of the trees, meeting the line of the mountains, feels somehow dynamic. It’s interesting that the snow you’re standing on doesn’t seem as white as that in the first photo. I know that many factors can affect color, especially when it’s as subtle as this, but I did wonder if, in the second photo, light from the sunset might have colored the landscape differently.

Yes, the sunset colors are reflected in the snow.

Beautiful sunset that definitely says ‘color photo’. I look forward to seeing what you come up with on your next trip there.
