Americana in Arcata

Americana is any collection of materials and things concerning or characteristic of the United States or of the American people, and is representative or even stereotypical of American culture as a whole

Wikipedia

This is a very unusual photo for me, in the subject and the equipment I used to obtain it (see below under photography tips)

On a previous post, Humboldt County Redwoods and Fern, I wrote about having been to Humboldt County on the 4thof July weekend with my son and friends. Since our destination was about five hours from home, we chose to book an Airbnb house for two nights in the town of Arcata. Our neighborhood was composed of older, small homes, some in a state of disrepair, showing pealing, stained paint, and modern, yet old-looking cars randomly parked in front of them. This pair, house and car, called my attention for being so neat. I love the contrast between the two primary colors, the rectangular house alighted with the rectangular vintage car, the windows and doors of the car strategically placed, anterior to the doors and windows of the house, almost complementing them. The plastic trash cans arranged in front of the green garage doors give a a modern look to this seemingly antique American scene.

Location: Arcata, CA, USA;

Equipment: Motorola cell phone;

Photography tips:  The reason why I often post details of my equipment when I share photos is that at some point I want to make the argument that equipment does not always matter. The cell phone was the best tool I had at the moment, to make this shot. After cropping, it is a small file, it will print 6 ½ by 5 ½ inches at 150 dpi. Good for sharing on the www, or even to make a small print in a magazine.

    I like it! The contrast of “dreary day” against the pop of color.

      Glad you like it. Always gloomy in Eureka area!

    If this is a single image (as opposed to a sandwich in which the drops and the car came from separate photographs), then you were probably helped by your cell phone camera’s very short focal length and its concomitantly large depth of field. I agree that the car aligned well with the house and that the differing colors worked well together.

    Alessandra, while the image is great, I really appreciate your explanation of how you saw the colors and shapes. I’m going to give more thought as to why I like a scene. Thanks.

    I love everything about this picture: the colours; the rain drops on the window; even what appears to be a Christmas wreath still on the door on 4th of July

    An image made of rectangles. I love graphic lines! The focus on the raindrops really lends a feel to the photo as well.
