I’m not sure about this one. There is tons of detail, but there is also a lot of detail and nowhere for the eye to rest or end up. I found myself looking up and down and wondering where to stop.
I was surprised to see that Ponderosa pine makes it into Texas: but only in three counties in the mountainous area of our west. I enjoy photos of bark, and this is an interesting one. Its patterns look rather like lichens. Is this one tree, or are there multiple trunks? I tried to decide, but couldn’t.
It’s only one tree. The deep grooves is that appear black are in fact green and covered with green lichen. I will be posting different interpretations of it and will also show the color picture on a future post.
It’s a very strong and strangely interesting texture. Had you not told me it was bark, I’m not sure I would have guessed. My first impression is of a metallic, mineral substance.

The USDA map shows it in three contiguous counties in far west Texas.

LOL thanks for your honest assessment. I agree this one is not for everybody. I like to throw stuff out there, test the grounds.

The bark’s texture is interesting and does look like lichens. In a way it reminds me of a candle’s drippings at its base.

Thanks for your input. It does look sort of metallic, it’s a characteristic of the bark of this tree.
