It would be interesting to flip this horizontally and have them blowing in the wind from left to right! We read that way and I think it might make the image stronger perhaps. One comment on the subject – I was always taught (if you are taught things like this) that you should compose an image with an odd number of items in the main subject. But which one would you drop!
I had experimented with flipping and I didn’t like it particularly. I have not been taught to compose images with an odd number of items, but I have come across guidelines that suggest that even numbers, particularly if they divide the frame into two, are to be generally avoided. Although I do have some uneasiness about the balance in this image, I can’t quite put my finger on it. I would not eliminate any of the lanterns, that’s for sure, and finding a group to photograph was tough. They often come in bunches with juxtaposed pods.
Hi Alessandra, Your work is amazing. I’m glad to see you consistently producing high-quality art. You commented on my blog post back in November about NFT photography. I know you were looking into it but were still on the fence. I have learned a lot about the NFT photography community and I think your work would do well. Please connect with me on Twitter if you are interested in exploring it 🙂
Spectacular. They look like some kind of alien pod, but that’s my sci-fi brain working.

We can imagine a breeze blowing from right to left, even if none was.

I like it. How do you achieve the black background?

In this case I photographed the seedpods against a black background at home.
